A phlebotomist is one who draws blood to be used for various purposes, such as diagnostic or medical reasons. They are trained to perform venipunctures, finger-sticks as well as arterial punctures, in other words they collect blood from the human body from different places.

In detail, a venipuncure is drawing blood from the veins. While a finger-stick is a skin puncture, usually at the finger in order to gather blood. Furthermore, an arterial puncture is a bit more difficult and involves drawing blood from the arteries. It will depend on your education or certification to be able to do all punctures.

As a phlebotomist the first step you will do before any blood is drawn is to correctly identify the patient, explain the procedures to them and answer any concerns or questions. Then when you correctly identified them you can draw blood. In addition, the phlebotomist will ensure to follow the proper procedures such as hand washing and glove wearing. All phlebotomist must ensure that the blood is drawn into the correct tubes because each tube contains different enzymes used to test for a variety of things, and you do not want to mix them up!

Responsibility doesn’t end there! As a phlebotomist you will explain the post procedure care to the patient, such as how to care for the wound or puncture, and then deliver the specimen/ blood to the laboratory.
